Award-winning accountants with strong links to the city are expanding into Hull, ready to shake up the industry with a new approach to client experience and innovative tax products.

Northern Accountants is a multi-award-winning digital accounting firm employing a team of 45 with offices in Leeds, Scotland, and Hull. The company has a group turnover of three million pounds and an ambitious target to break into the top 100 accounting firms in the next three years.

The company has been at the forefront of the accounting industry, most recently winning the first-ever Best Technology Initiative award at the prestigious Yorkshire Accountancy Awards. Northern Accountants are long-term advocates of harnessing technology to provide innovative solutions for their clients so they can, in their words, “do less work and earn more money.” Directors Phil Ellerby, Ben Muncaster, Ricky Field, and Mark Alderson are committed to providing service excellence and driving transformational change.

Although headquartered in Leeds, Northern Accountants’ roots are firmly set in Hull. The Director and founder of the business, Phil Ellerby, was born and brought up in Sutton, attending Malet Lambert High School. Phil lived and worked in the city until his mid-twenties when the opportunity to work at GE Capital in Leeds was too good to turn down.

“As a proud Hull lad, it’s exciting to bring Northern Accountants ‘home’ after all these years, especially as its journey began on my Mum’s kitchen table. I believe—in fact, I know—we can bring a lot to the business community in Hull and the surrounding area. Ricky and I have had to be incredibly patient to get going, but now that the hand brake is off, I can’t wait to get started.”

Northern Accountants Hull is headed up by Ricky Field, who grew up in Branshome and has worked his entire professional career in the city of Hull. Ricky qualified in 2006, becoming a partner of a well-known Hull-based accounting firm in 2009, before the opportunity to work as part of the Northern Accountants team presented itself in the summer of 2022. This was not by coincidence, as Ricky and Phil have known each other since 1997 when they both started their A-Levels together at Wilberforce College and have kept in touch ever since. 

The Hull business has already grown into a team of four qualified accountants, supported by the significant infrastructure offered by the wider Northern Accountants group. Ricky and his team have hit the ground running by already doubling the Hull operation since incorporation. What is the next milestone for Northern Accountants Hull? “One million pound turnover by the end of 2025,” Ricky says confidently.

Grand ambitions indeed, but Ricky is convinced that the combination of digital expertise, industry-leading service levels, and innovative products providing clients with new opportunities to save tax will create further opportunities for the newly arrived business. This will see the Hull side of the business grow rapidly, presenting new opportunities for talented accountants in the Hull area to join this exciting business.

“Hull is my home, and having worked in the city for 25 years, I firmly believe that while the traditional firms do a good job servicing clients, their lack of innovation and reluctance to change provide a real opportunity for Northern Accountants to make an impact within Hull and its surrounding areas. This has already been seen in the company’s growth in the early stages. Phil and I are looking forward to building this business and working with the local businesses”
